Earning money through affiliate or referral programs is possible, but not guaranteed. Before setting off on your affiliate empire dream, think for a moment about how you will achieve your goal to make a regular and substantial income from referring others to the products and services you recommend. Here are three tips you can keep in mind before you set off to join every program that comes your way.

1. Be Selective

When you first set your mind to making money through affiliate programs, the tendency may be to think in terms of volume. The more programs you join, the more money you will make! Not necessarily. There are endless programs out there you can join for free and in a very short time, you could have a portfolio of dozens, or even hundreds, of referral programs.

Most affiliate marketers who are successful will tell you that less is more! While you may join multiple programs, this needs to be within reason to make it manageable for you. Even more important is choosing programs that you have researched and would be happy to recommend to others. Making money is not in itself a reason to join a referral program. Selecting quality will be more profitable than quantity.

2. Be Specific

When you look at some websites operated by people trying to make a living through referrals, the impression you get is that there is no rhyme or reason to them. Visitors will see such websites for what they really are. Simply an attempt by someone to make money by referring products and services they have probably never tried personally.

Being specific in our choice of referral programs will give our website a sense of direction. It will also give our website visitors the feeling that we are qualified to make genuine recommendations. For example, a website which deals in child care would do well to link to companies related to this general subject. Visitors will see you as an authority.

3. Be Realistic

Take a realistic view of affiliate marketing and avoid disappointment. Simply joining every program you come across will not guarantee people will click on your referral links just because they exist. If your affiliate programs are linked to your website, to earn any kind of income from them will require that you bring traffic to your site. You can have hundreds of affiliate links to your name, but if no-one ever sees them, there will be no referral income.

Accept that earning a referral income will not happen overnight and may require you to concentrate more on your website content and let the affiliate links take care of themselves. Affiliate marketing can be a source of income if you have clear goals in mind as to how you will get visitors to click on them.
